I’m complicated. A renaissance man is what I call it. My name is Mortimer which in itself is labyrinthine to many. In elementary schooL I struggled when it was time to pronounce my own name in class for fear of embarrassment or ridicule. The first day of class was always a stressful experience for me. It was further amplified when it was time for role call. The teacher usually destroyed my name and called me something like More-time-her, as I slumped in my seat. You know the one, with the desk attached to it. The desks were just the right size to play hide and seek under. We hid under them during earthquake drills so why not hide under them during role call?
I always wondered why teachers didn’t practice pronouncing my name. They are teachers, right? I’m a brother(a) named Mortimer what were my parents thinking? Well actually, I come from a line of Mortimer’s. My dad was Mortimer number two. His uncle was Mortimer number one. So there have been at least three black men named Mortimer from Costa Rica in the history of the world and I happen to be one of them ๐
By the end of the week the teachers usually knew how to pronounce my name. They had five days to get it . Why didn’t they allow us ample attempts to retake quizzes to get the answers correct? Let’s not discuss substitute teachers.
As I matured, the sound of my name had a certain distinguished ring to it in my ears. People would say, “hey Mortimer, hi Mortimer, what’s up Mortimer.” There was also the Latin version, “morrrrtimer”. I was proud to be the man with the unique name everyone remembered.
Now, the fact that I’m blogging is a minor miracle. I ‘m a very private person. I internalize first and last. Even my closest friends and relatives don’t know the real me. I was once considered shy, reserved and cool. Truly, I’m not. I just came to realize I value me time.
Take a look at the me, myself and I post when you get a chance. It’s my first post. I’m sure I’ll look back one day during this journey and wonder why I posted About Me.
